what are open letters?

Students from all participating countries will exchange ideas for the Open Letters using the www.eyep.info website.

The letters will be based on class projects developed by the students. The letters will aim to discover and understand the environment, based on a global approach that takes account of the three pillars of sustainable development (economy, ecology and social life.)

The letters will be written to key environmental figures. Recipients may fall into one of the following target groups:

  • Producers (industry, agriculture, craftsman etc)
  • Journalists
  • NGO's
  • Educators
  • Researchers
  • International organisations (UNO, UNESCO etc)
  • National Authorities

How will the open letters be compiled?

  • Schools work on their local projects
  • Schools exchange their thoughts and findings on the www.eyep.info website
  • Each school chooses a recipient for their Open Letter
  • Each school will form committee groups with other schools depending on their chosen subject
  • Each committee group will work together to draft the Open Letter (each group will produce one Open Letter and there will be several committee groups)
  • The whole group will approve the Open Letter
  • The Open Letters will be sent to each chosen recipient
  • The students will discuss the content of the Open Letters with the recipients at the Youth Eco-Parliament meeting in Paris in October 2006

Structure of the open letters

Part 1
Summary presentation of the environmental problems identified by the class projects based on local observation.

Part 2
Development of ideas and arguments resulting from the presented facts - questioning the target public in a constructive way and calling for actions.

It is expected that throughout the length of the project the students will work in contact with representatives from the target group they have selected.
