winning schools

In September 2004 Valpak took a group of ten pupils from five winning schools to the first European Youth Eco-Parliament in Berlin. Here these students represented the UK and worked with their European counterparts to produce a White Paper on the Environment.

The winning schools in the 2004 competition were:

  • Air - Toynbee School, Eastleigh, Hants
  • Water - Sandwick Junior High School, Shetland
  • Waste - Knox Academy, Haddington, East Lothian
  • Energy - Uplands Community Technology College, Wadhurst, East Sussex
  • Food - Victoria College, Belfast

    Stage 1

At the end of 2003 Valpak invited all UK schools to enter its Youth Eco-Parliament competition to be one of the five schools chosen to visit Berlin in September 2004. We looked for enthusiastic students to write a project proposal (approximately 1,000 words) on one of the following five topics: water, energy, waste, food and air. All the winning schools agreed to spend a minimum of one hour a week on the project, either during class time or as an extra-curricular activity.

    Stage 2

The five winning schools then completed work on their individual projects and prepared resolutions and action proposals with other European schools to be submitted as a White Paper in Berlin at the Youth Eco-Parliament. Ten UK pupils (two nominated from each winning school) then travelled to Berlin for a two-day all expenses paid trip to meet their European counterparts. Collectively the students prepared a White Paper on the Environment which was subsequently presented to MEPs and the European Environmental Commissioner.
