Air
Toynbee School in Eastleigh, Hants won the air category.
Project Outline
The school council completed a 'School's Travel Plan' in partnership with Eastleigh Borough Council which identified the forms of transport used by pupils to reach school. It found that the majority of pupils travelled to school by car, and many of pupils were being driven distances of under one mile. Toynbee's project aimed to encourage cycling, walking and car sharing in order to reduce air pollution, improve health and lessen congestion.
After carrying out further research, the project team (volunteer Year 10s) produced three videos and a website to target different groups with the 'reduce car use' message. The team then divided into various activity groups - project management, research, music and lyrics, art work, style and concept, script writing, directing, performing and editing the videos and website design.
The school also asked Eastleigh Borough Council for assistance in developing the recommendations drawn up in the original travel plan. BBC South kindly lent the school a digital video camera and editing programme to help with the project.
