Food

Victoria College in Belfast won the food category.

Project Outline

The focus of Victoria College's project was the management of food waste and food packaging. The 15 students who were involved in this project were all Year 11 volunteers. Each student dedicated at least one hour of their Life Skills programme each week to the project, along with lunchtime and after school meetings.

The college carried out a waste audit in the school canteen and staffroom and researched the feasibility of setting up a food composting programme. As part of the project they encouraged their food suppliers to responsibly dispose of their own packaging and waste in an environmentally friendly manner. They also explored the options of sourcing food locally for use in the college canteen.

The college aims to promote Fair Trade and organically produced food and to achieve a more integrated approach to environmental management within the school.
