Water
Sandwick Junior High School in Shetland won the water category.
Project Outline
Sandwick Junior High School surveyed two similarly sized beaches on the east and west coast of Shetland, on the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean respectively. The North Sea beach is only 1 km below the school at Nestibrig, while the beach on the Atlantic side is just 5 km away.
Students collected, categorised and, where possible, worked out the source of the debris found on each of the beaches. They then carried out a clean-up operation on each beach. Students carried out a follow-up survey of the beaches 2 months later, to assess any changes.
A representative from the school also attended the Eco-conference in Sweden on marine pollution to carry out additional research.
