What next for WEEE?
At the end of March, the DTI published a discussion document on the implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. The DTI's conclusions raised a number of important issues for local authorities.p>
The Retail Compliance Scheme (RCS), operated by Valpak, has submitted a response on behalf of those retailers that have 'expressed an interest' in the scheme on all issues relevant to them. The RCS is also planning to consult with various groups to clarify the implications of the DTI document.
As part of this process, meetings with local authority representative groups, including the LGA, the Welsh LGA, COSLA, NILGA, LARAC and LAWDO are in the process of being arranged.
The RCS will be in contact with LAs as soon as we are clear on what exactly is on offer. In the meantime, LAs can register their interest in the scheme by logging on to www.retail-weee.co.uk and clicking on the 'retailer compliance' option.
