St James Catholic High School, Barnet
Project Overview
Initial school recycling projects led St James Catholic School to think more widely about the school's environmental impact. This led to the installation of solar panels at the school in June 2005, which generate renewable energy for the school. The e-squad is now hoping to go one step further and apply for funding for a 2.5kW wind turbine. The school is already holding debates on the issues surrounding renewable energy.
The energy project proposes to build on the successful work carried out so far by installing the wind turbine and generally investigating different energy options available to them. This will involve carrying out a school energy audit to identify where energy is currently being wasted, followed by the development of an action plan to reduce energy use.
Further to this, the students plan to design and construct a straw bale room, which will become the school's eco-room.
St James Catholic School plan to consider energy use on a wider scale by developing links with schools in Tobago and China to learn about projects being carried out in their countries.
