Banbridge High School, Northern Ireland

Project Overview

Banbridge High School has been working over the course of the last few years to improve recycling within the school and local community. The main aims of their work are to continually increase the level of recycling, whilst also raising money for charity.

The school runs competitions for the best recyclers, with the chance to win some great prizes including a day off school!! By running regular competitions on environmental themes, the school encourages friendly competition between classes to win awards. Representatives from their chosen charities have visited the school and presented in assemblies, this provides a further incentive to the pupils to be environmentally aware.

Instead of a tuck shop, on Fridays the local bakery supplies buns wrapped in biodegradable kitchen roll rather than plastic to reduce waste. As well as this, the school runs a stationary shop stocking recycled products. The school has also introduced policies on electronic communication to reduce the volume of paper used.
