Hazardous wastes contain substances that are harmful to human health and the natural environment.

Typical hazardous wastes include organic sludges (human and animal), contaminated soils, infectious clinical / surgical wastes, heavy metals, and industrial wastes.

In repsponse to a Directive by The European Commission to control the management of hazardous waste the following were incorporated into national legislation:

The List of Waste (England) Regulations

The Hazardous Waste Regulations now require producers of hazardous waste to register their premises with the Environment Agency, this registration is valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually.
