Plastic Milk Bottle Tops??

5 2128

Does anyone know if there is any charity or organisation that would like the plastic tops from milk bottles? I have been collecting the tops for a school in Cornwall who were helping some children to get wheelchairs to use they have received 4 wheelchairs but no longer require anymore help. This seems such a worthwhile thing to do and I and the local schools would like to see if you can help anyone else get money to buy things for children in schools or any organisation, but I am at a loss as to where I can obtain any information as to who would be interested in collecting milk bottle tops. PLEASE HELP ME FIND SOMEWHERE

I prefer to buy organic milk but can't find any in glass bottles. Can anyone solve the conundrum of organic and plastic vs. nonorganic and glass?

Old wooden pallets

1 1568

Did you know that old wooden pallets can be recycled to make instant garden decking?

Some pallets have very close fitting wooden spars and can be instantly treated with garden paint/stain. Others have wider gaps in the spars but these gaps can easily be infilled with old pieces of wood.

As the hight of pallets is never usually more than 20-30cms (between 8 and 12 inches appeox.) the finished decking is ideal for areas where either small children might want to 'roam' or disabled or elderly people may not want to climb steps to higher level decking.

For higher level decking ensure pallets are stongly and safely suspended.

Pallet wood is usually unfinshed soft wood and can be subject to spliters etc. but paint/stain usually cures this problem without the need to sand or plane. Pick pallets which have been used quite a lot and the grain is generally smoother. Pallets in childrens play areas will need to be smoothed for safety reasons.
As long as the pallets have concrete or old bricks under the corners they will not rot quickly.

Small 3-4 cms high wooden decking squares are already on sale in garden centres for between £2-4 each so it makes environmental and economical sense to re-use old pallets.

I'm looking for recycling containers for my school, any ideas?...

1 1526

We've recently started a council run recycling scheme at our school, but unfortunately recycling containers for the classrooms are not provided, and we are currently using old cardboard boxes. Although this is good because it in itself is recycling, they often need replacing and look tatty. Does anyone know where I could find proper bins or boxes that are about the right size for a classroom, i.e. not much bigger than a normal waste paper bin, but that have recycling logos on them? The site manager has recently agreed to purchase about a dozen to start with, but has left me the task of sourcing them. Help!
