Paper Cups

The National Cup Recycling Scheme

In 2018, Valpak and Costa launched The National Cup Recycling Scheme with an aim to increase the number of paper cups recycled.

It is the UK’s first nationwide paper cup recycling scheme and Valpak is the Scheme administrator. It is now co-funded by 6 other major retailers:

  • McDonalds
  • Pret a Manger
  • Caffè Nero
  • Greggs
  • Burger King
  • Pure

The Scheme is free to join and makes paper cup recycling commercially attractive to waste collectors, due to a financial incentive of £70 per tonne of cups. This is on top of the commercial fee they receive for the material from the reprocessors.

In 2018, there were only 5 waste collectors signed up to the Scheme. Now 27 waste collectors have signed up and we expect more to do so.

Scheme success

Since its launch in 2018, the National Cup Recycling Scheme has prevented 130 million paper cups from ending up in landfill, which equates to the height of 1.1 million double decker buses or 250,000 Nelson’s Columns! The Scheme was also a finalist in the National Recycling Awards, and the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management
