Pack a picnic, not plastic
How to plan a plastic-free picnic
How to plan a plastic-free picnic
This month we are celebrating Plastic Free July and National Picnic Month. With the school summer holidays and warmer weather approaching, picnics are a great way to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
However, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of our activities. Single-use cutlery, excessive packaging and litter can all harm the environment—but small changes can make a big difference.
6 yips for a plastic-free picnic
Bring cutlery from home
Instead of using single-use plastic cutlery, bring reusable items from home such as forks, spoons, plates and mugs.
Make food from scratch
Preparing your own food helps reduce plastic packaging. Homemade sandwiches, cakes and snacks are a great way to cut waste and save money.
Use refillable cups
Bring reusable cups or bottles for drinks. Many cafés will refill them—and some may even offer a discount.
Choose reusable straws
If you need straws, opt for paper, metal or bamboo alternatives instead of plastic ones.
Pack food in reusable containers
Avoid cling film and foil by storing food in reusable containers, jars or wax wraps that can be washed and reused.
Take your waste home
Bring a spare reusable bag to collect any rubbish. This ensures waste is disposed of properly and recycled where possible.
Enjoy the outdoors sustainably
Now you’re ready to enjoy a more sustainable picnic. Pack your essentials, grab a picnic blanket (and maybe an umbrella for the unpredictable British weather!) and head to your favourite outdoor spot.
By making a few simple swaps, you can reduce waste and enjoy the outdoors while protecting the environment.
