Whether you are looking to encourage environmentally friendly habits in children or simply want engaging bedtime stories, this selection of children’s books introduces key environmental themes such as plastic pollution, nature appreciation, growing food, and climate resilience.
Here are five recommended books for children aged 4–11 that help inspire awareness and positive action for the planet.
Turtle Trouble by Stuart McDonald
This story follows Sheldon, a young turtle who becomes caught up in the impacts of plastic pollution while out at sea.
The book highlights the dangers plastic waste poses to marine life and encourages children to think about reducing plastic use. It also introduces ideas such as beach clean-ups and caring for ocean ecosystems in a simple and accessible way.
Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
This beautifully illustrated book explores the many shades and meanings of green found in nature, from forests to oceans.
It encourages children to appreciate the natural world around them and recognise the beauty of plants, landscapes, and wildlife. The visual storytelling makes it ideal for early readers.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Picture Book Edition) by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
Based on a true story, this book follows William Kamkwamba, who builds a windmill from scrap materials to help his family’s farm survive drought conditions in Malawi.
It introduces themes of climate resilience, innovation, and problem-solving, showing how creativity can help communities respond to environmental challenges.
Grandpa’s Garden by Stella Fry
This seasonal story follows Billy as he helps his grandpa grow vegetables throughout the year, from planting seeds to harvesting produce.
The book introduces children to growing food, seasonal change, and composting, while encouraging hands-on learning about where food comes from.
What a Waste: Rubbish, Recycling, and Protecting Our Planet by Jess French
This educational book explains the global impact of waste, especially plastic pollution, while also highlighting practical solutions.
It introduces recycling, waste reduction, and global environmental challenges in a way that is engaging and easy for children to understand.
We hope this list inspires families to explore environmental topics together. It is never too early to encourage awareness of sustainability, and books like these help children develop curiosity, empathy for nature, and ideas for positive environmental action.
